The Last Year: Arrival of Jean Mis

Jasmine Bae, Spring 2022

The Last Year: Arrival of Jean Mis is an adventure narrative game created on twine. This game and narrative is set in the world of The Quiet Year game played early in the semester. By revisting the game outcome and stories that I crafted with the previous game, I was able to develop the narrative further through twine. In the twine game, Jean and the player go on an adventure together to form an objective and go through obstacles together in order to reach a goal. The player can switch the outcome or process by choosing certain narrative paths within the game.

For crafting the game, I started out with otter ai to re-read the whole documented Quiet Year game which helped me retrieve memories and gain more ideas for how I wanted the new game to flow. With the oblique strategies cards, I gained further inspiration from phrases outside of my own.

From there, I created the character name by shuffling my own name through the anagrams and used botnik to come up with a title with the character name in it. Scrambling the entire text with CharNG and n+7 helped me generate more stories based on the keywords given. I also used crowdsourcing by collecting data and information from peers, asking them what their choices in certain situations that appear throughout my narrative would be, and I have implemented their response in the choices. There are visual imagery that switches throughout the story marking different times of the day through color. The story ends in darkness no matter what path you choose to go through and ends on the same note for eveyone playing the game eventually.
